The great luminary of Malankara Orthodox Church

February 23rd marks the anniversary of St. Geevarghese Mar Dionysius Vattasseril, popularly known as Malankara Sabha Bhasuran (The Great Luminary of the Malankara Orthodox Church) which our Church has bestowed on him in recognition of his rich contribution to Malankara Orthodox Church. Vattasseril Thirumeni was a man of prayer, determination and dynamism. He was a saint who never stooped before falsehood. He bravely fought for the establishment of Catholicate to be the symbol of self-identity and independence of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church.

St. Geevarghese Mar Dionysius Vattasseril, Malankara Metropolitan, was a bright light for the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church that illumined during her dark and tumultuous times and possessed the vision to bring the Church triumphantly from the bonds of foreign oppression. Thirumeni dedicated his entire life to secure the freedom and welfare of the Holy Church.

Funeral Oration By HH Catholicos Baselius Geevarghese II At The Wake Of Malankara Metropolitan Dionysius VI Vattasseril

On Saturday, February 24, 1934, as the body of Malankara Metropolitan Dionysius VI Vattasseril lay in state, HH Catholicos Baselius Geevarghese II delivered a funeral oration in the midst of the Holy Qurbano at the Old Seminary Chapel, Kottayam, recalling the life and times of his guru, mentor, and spiritual father. Never before or after in the annals of little Kerala has any public personality's life and legacy been so truthfully summed up for posterity through the spoken word as the Catholicos did that day in his brief speech.

The Perunal of St. Geevarghese Mar Dionysius Vattasseril, the Malankara Sabha Bhasuran (The Great Luminary of the Malankara Orthodox Church) was celebrated at the Old Orthodox theological Seminary, Kottayam on February 23rd. These are the photos of the 2008 perunal. The perunal was led by H.H. Baselios Marthoma Didimos I and was assisted by other bishops.

H.H. Moran Mar Baselios Geevarghese II: Seeing an Episcopa in Pampady thirumeni

In spite of the reluctance of Kuriakose Rembachen to become an Episcopa, H.H. Moran Mar Baselios Geevarghese II, the then Catholicos saw the need of the services of Kuriakose Rembachen as an Episcopa and was able to convince Rembachen to step up to the need. On February 16, 1929 H.H. Moran Mar Baselios Geevarghese II, along with Vattaseril thirumeni and Mar Ivanios thiurmeni consecrated Kuriakose Rembachen as an Episcopa.
